Meaning is not the same as mechanism
A tradition can matter deeply without needing a modern scientific explanation attached to it.
People inherit practices because they carry memory, identity, belonging, discipline, grief, celebration or sacred meaning. Sometimes a practice also has a measurable material effect. Sometimes it does not. The mistake is assuming the second must exist to justify the first.
Keeping meaning and mechanism distinct usually makes both easier to understand.
